Assessing the Appropriateness of Your Collection
Title
Assessing the Appropriateness of Your Collection
Description
It has been over 30 years since the initial publication of the WLN Collection Assessment Manual. This manual established a comprehensive framework for collection assessment, incorporating Collection Depth Indicators/Codes as well as the Divisions, Categories, & Subjects Hierarchical Tool. These tools are applicable to libraries of all types or sizes. While more recent updates for WLN’s hierarchical tools are not readily available, certain customizations maybe necessary to adapt to the evolving environment. For instance, adjustments might be needed to accommodate changes in subject placement within different categories or divisions, or to assess the growing presence of electronic resources. This poster presentation showcases an ongoing collection assessment practice at Jacksonville State University Library. The presentation covers the key elements and steps for implementing the Conspectus and Checklist methodologies, including who will conduct the assessment and how often it is conducted. Additionally, attendees have an opportunity to learn about the available tools for accomplishing the assessment and how the collection is evaluated for appropriateness. The presentation also explores the impacts of the assessment, including how providing an appropriate collection supports students' academic success, facilitates wise library budgeting, and assists academic departments with accreditation.
