Title
Building Family Branch in Rural Area: An Action to Create the Literary Village
Subject
Description
Both material resources and knowledge resources are insufficient in rural China. Therefore, the establishment of a family library branch in poor areas is not only an extension of the library services, but also an effective way to guarantee fair access to knowledge. Based on the current situation, the preparatory team of Non-Government Library Association in China designed the project of “Rural Library Family Reading Site”, collaborating with multiple groups of participants in the society. The project was combined with an action study by the following steps: (1) the project team contact rural libraries and design selection criteria; (2) the rural library selects several qualified local families; (3) each family is provided a bookshelf and 100 books suitable for the age of the children; (4) Books of the branch could be lend to other children in the community; (5) rural libraries organize reading activities with family branches and volunteers regularly. We connect with the scholars, librarians and readers, trying to enable and inspire the reading family. By the end of 2019, we had worked together with five rural libraries in different regions, and donated 35 bookshelves and 3220 books to 29 families in China. Our poster will describe the background, operation mode and effect of the project through photos and data charts. This project has good adaptability and compatibility in rural areas especially undeveloped and isolated villages.
