Abstract

The speakers will share the results of their ALA grant awarded research project, “The Role of Chinese American Librarians in Library and Information Science Diversity.” This project collects and analyzes quantitative and qualitative data gathered from active CALA members in the United States, including ten senior and junior CALA members who have been involved with diversity initiatives selected for interviews. The aim of this project is to investigate the role of Chinese American librarians in Library and Information Science (LIS) diversity efforts in the 21st century and to assess the effectiveness of their contribution to diversity. This project addresses critical diversity issues within LIS and recommends strategies on how to recruit and promote Chinese American librarians within the profession. It also identifies and documents stories of best practices and lessons learned which will be the basis of toolkit to be provided to Chinese American librarians serving diverse users in their communities. It is hoped that the findings will provide much needed knowledge to Chinese American librarians and other library and information professionals to help fill the gap in diversity research and carry out ongoing diversity initiatives.
