Abstract

As part of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL)’s Collaborative Futures (CF) initiative, Omni is a shared library system that allows for discovery of academic sources across 19 Ontario universities. In 2024, Ex Libris introduced a new AI-based Research Assistant in Primo VE, and each CF library can choose whether to enable it. At Laurier Library, the User Services Librarian led a two phase consultation process: Phase 1 focused on developing evaluation criteria, and Phase 2 involved testing the tool. As a subject librarian, the presenter volunteered to participate in Phase 2. In this session, she will share her experience assessing the AI-based Research Assistant using nine criteria and conducting a mock teaching session to evaluate its teachability. These insights may help other libraries undertake similar reviews of AI-driven tools.
