"Chinese Ancestors Portraits Project & Wikidata" is the first session in the CALA Speaker Series: Describing Chinese Rare Books and Cultural Heritage Collections. It shares the reasons and motivations for the selection of Wikidata as a platform for connecting users to the collections of the Smithsonian Libraries & Archives. It discusses the advantages of using Wikidata, including its visualization options and potential for linking collections within and outside the Smithsonian. Additionally, it shares the challenges that the Smithsonian Libraries & Archives team has encountered in describing the Chinese Ancestors Portraits from the Museum of Asian Art in Wikidata, and their decision-making progress. Smithsonian Libraries & Archives’ wiki page and blog document their Wikidata projects and overall Wikidata experience.
