Promoting Chinese Cultural Heritage in the Working Environment and the Community

As Chinese American librarians, it is our mission to promote Chinese cultural heritage to help maintain our identity and roots. To integrate this vision into the working environment as well as the community requires dedication, creativity and opportunity. This talk will touch on the various ways of advocating and preserving Chinese cultural traditions and legacy in the library field. It will discuss several projects the author has been involved in to promote Chinese cultural heritage in the working environment, including building collections on Chinese studies in the Chinese American Librarians Association’s institutional repository, curating an exhibit on Chinese cultural heritage and Lunar New Year Celebration in the University Library, working on Chinese literary writers and works with the Chinese Cultural Heritage Wikidata Group, participating in evaluating books by authors of Chinese descendent, and translating books on the westerners’ experience in China in the 19th to 20th century. While highlighting Chinese culture and traditions is not the major responsibility or central part of the author’s job, she tries to maintain a balance, be thoughtful, and seek out opportunities. This talk will also mention the author’s community experience including teaching in a Chinese school and serving on a local Chinese professional association. It will end with discussing the challenges and opportunities for Chinese American librarians in achieving the vision of promoting Chinese culture and heritage in the US.
