Creative Programming and Outreach for Immigrant Communities

Abstract

This lightning talk showcases how the Thomas Crane Public Library expanded bilingual programming and outreach for immigrant communities despite limited budgets and staffing. By creatively using makerspace resources, we developed high-quality materials and giveaways to support a range of programs, including reading challenges, book clubs, library tours, and seasonal or cultural events.

Collaborations with local nonprofit partners allowed us to offer free workshops and community activities such as Tai Chi classes, Know Your Rights sessions, and festival celebrations, welcoming immigrant patrons and introducing them to library services. These strategies demonstrate how existing resources and partnerships can amplify impact, strengthen cultural heritage, and build lasting connections within immigrant communities. The talk will share practical lessons and insights for turning library spaces and collaborations into meaningful bilingual programming and outreach.
