Using an Interactive Authoring Tool for a Cataloging/Metadata
Creation Class – Experimentation and Prospects

Title

Using an Interactive Authoring Tool for a Cataloging/Metadata
Creation Class – Experimentation and Prospects

Description

Cataloging, classification, and metadata creation are essential functions of information organization in LIS (library and information science) field. High-quality data serves critical roles in effective organization of library materials. However, teaching cataloging/metadata creation courses can be
challenging. According to a recent study, LIS students had difficulties understanding the theory, terminology and tools of cataloging, and did not obtain the knowledge offered by a cataloging course at a satisfactory level (Kyprianos et al., 2022). Kyprianos et al. (2022) suggested that instructors
should think of alternative and better ways to engage students in the learning process.

This project explores an interactive authoring tool, H5P, to enhance the learning experience and promote self-directed learning (SDL). The mini-course was designed with interactive elements such as audio, video, and quizzes. Small sample surveys were conducted to measure usability and learning effectiveness.
