Like other professional associations across various fields, CALA has been struggling to sustain membership, specifically recruiting and motivating volunteers and identifying members who can serve as volunteers. To examine the effects of CALA members’ need fulfillment and perceived organizational support on their attitude toward CALA and CALA local chapters, the Assessment and Evaluation Committee conducted a member survey in 2023. The poster reports the survey results by revealing CALA members’ engagement, barriers to participation and ideas for improvements.

This presentation is a brief introduction to acknowledge the understanding of linked data, which yields hope to link separate objects in a meaningful way. The topic and potential of linked data has been hotly debated and very exciting. However, the implementation of linked data is a complex and costly process, which triggers people to think “whether it’s the kingdom of structured data or an irritating buzzword.”Answering this question, technically and theoretically bringing down the understanding barrier towards linked data, this presentation will be very useful to you. I’m going to outline some difficult problems linked data is faced with. I will talk about what have been done with it so far and what influence it exerts on you as well. There is no need for you to be a web developer or a profes
sional cataloger. As long as you can open up a web page, you may understand. Anyway, hope it
will be a useful presentation that would encourage you to think, to guess, to smile, and make things
easier a little bit.

This presentation discusses some basic knowledge and skills for an East Asian Study Libran. To
best serve the faculty and students, the librarians needs to know related academic programs and
faculty expertise, their research interests, courses taught, and articles and books published. What’s more, the librarian needs to have a thorough knowledge of the resources the library already holds and needs to add; to building a close relationship with faculty and colleagues in the same field in other institution; and to know reliable publishers home and abroad.

Diving into the university knowledge community:
navigating the expanded role of
the metadata librarian
<a href="/items/browse?advanced%5B0%5D%5Belement_id%5D=49&advanced%5B0%5D%5Btype%5D=is+exactly&advanced%5B0%5D%5Bterms%5D=Academic+librarians+--+Effect+of+technological+innovations+on">Academic librarians -- Effect of technological innovations on</a>

Metadata librarians' engaging in the university knowledge community is becoming a trend in recent
years. In preparing for this change, it can be challenging for the metadata librarians to step out of the "back room", engage in scholarly communication and actively participate in the university knowledge
community. This presentation discusses the shifting environment, the required changes for the
metadata librarians such as developing professional and technical competency, acquiring new knowledge and skills and getting into the new world to be more connected to students, faculty and researchers, and various factors that will affect the situation. It concludes that the best way for Metadata Librarians to be connected to the university knowledge community still needs further exploration.

Historically a frontier metropolis, Dunhuang was a strategic site along the Silk Road in northwestern China, a crossroads of trade, and a locus for religious, cultural, and intellectual influences since the Han dynasty (206 B.C.E.–220 C.E.). The 492 caves at the Mogao cliff near the modern town of Dunhuang have served as temples, sites for performative events, and an archive that consisted of medieval Chinese paintings and Buddhist sutras. Today, the Dunhuang Mogao Caves is among one of the most well-known UNESCO heritage sites along the ancient Silk Road. With technological advancements, the staging processes of the Dunhuang Mogao Caves are being developed into various forms by experts of heritage studies, from scholarly publications, theatrical dance drama, to the digital exhibition such as the Smithsonian’s Pure Land: Inside the Mogao Grottes at Dunhuang (Stromberg 2012) and most recently, the Getty Insitute’s Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China's Silk Road (Sivak and Hood 2015). This presentation will introduce the heritage per se as well as the various forms of conservation and preservation of the Dunhuang Mogao Caves. Presented at the 2016 Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Southeast Chapter Meeting, Rollins College, Orlando, FL. September 23, 2016.

Walks in the City of Canton is a book written by John Henry Gray of Christ's College, Cambridge who came to China and stayed as a missionary for many years, and it was published in 1875. This project did a preliminary analysis of the text of this book digitized by Google from the Library of Harvard University and uploaded to the Internet Archive. The Voyant generated top 500 words are tagged selectively aiming to find the more popular nouns, adjectives and verbs, and their related topics, sentiments or actions. This analysis is combined with the observations obtained in the translation of some chapters of this book by the presenter. Through the textual analysis of this historical travelogue, the audience will be exposed to the most interesting, vivid and sometimes astonishing narratives and topics, such as monasteries, emperors and officials, execution ceremony, raising silk worms and manufacturing white wax, along with an extensive variety of topics from streets, shops, examination halls, to festivals, gardens and tombs. It also adds a fuller picture to the beginning of modern Chinese history, including Qing dynasty’s closed-door policy and the western allies' entering by force, and it shows its appreciation of various humanistic sensibilities to different groups of people, including the blind, the aged, the foundlings and the born to be drowned baby girls, and some related facilities and philanthropic efforts. Presented at the 2016 Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Southeast Chapter Meeting, Rollins College, Orlando, FL. September 23, 2016.
